Cities are constantly in motion—filled with shifting light, sound, and activity. In Downtown Brooklyn, a vacant storefront became the canvas for an installation that captured this rhythm in a striking visual way.
The project, “In Every Transition, A Pattern,” transformed an empty retail space into an immersive public artwork using switchable film technology from Innovative Glass Corp.
The installation was created by MASARY Studios, an artist-owned collective based in Boston, and brought to life with switchable LC Privacy Film.
Located at 422 Fulton Street, the installation offered passersby an unexpected sensory experience that blended light and sound, that showcases the energy of the city.

A Collective Blending Art, Technology, and Space
Founded in 2015, MASARY Studios is known for immersive, site-specific installations that combine sound, light, interactivity, and performance. Rather than treating architecture as a static backdrop, the studio views each location as a collaborator in the artistic process.
For this project in Brooklyn, the collective saw creative potential in a vacant storefront along the busy Fulton Street corridor. Instead of leaving the space dormant, the team reimagined it as a living artwork reflecting the rhythm of the surrounding city.

Capturing the Rhythm of the Street
“In Every Transition, A Pattern” was designed to translate the sounds and tempo of Fulton Street into a visual language built from light, and the switch between frosted and transparent.
Recorded audio from the bustling street—footsteps, voices, and traffic—served as the installation’s underlying rhythm. These sounds controlled 135 panels of switchable LC Privacy Film supplied by Innovative Glass Corp..
The panels alternated between transparent and opaque states in choreographed sequences. Behind them, bright colored lights illuminated, creating bursts of color that pulsed in harmony with the soundscape.
From the sidewalk, pedestrians could watch the installation continually shift—revealing light one moment and concealing it the next. This interplay of opacity, transparency, and color created a visual rhythm that echoed the movement of the street outside.
MASARY described the installation as “utilizing LC Film as a register of rhythm,” transforming switchable film technology into a medium for artistic expression.

Expanding the Possibilities of Switchable Glass
For Innovative Glass Corp, the project represents a unique departure from more typical applications in commercial, healthcare, and residential environments.
The Fulton Street installation also highlights how these innovative materials can move beyond purely functional uses.
Through the collaboration between MASARY Studios and Innovative Glass Corp., a simple storefront window became dynamic urban artwork.
